Bean’s Market – Daegu Brunch Spot

Beans Market
Beans Market Restaurant, Daegu

Every once in a while you just want to go out for a nice breakfast…Little did I know that my beloved Sunday champagne brunches (or even a trip to a greasy spoon) would become an almost impossible to find treat when we moved to South Korea. Waegwan- a ‘rural city’ north of Daegu is almost completely devoid of anything resembling a place to sit down for an eggy, bacony morning meal. Sure, there is a Paris Baguette (don’t get me wrong- I love love love their fried, sugar dusted bean paste glutinous rice balls- and the peanut butter creme filled bread sticks are just awesome) but nowhere to just go and get a nice breakfast. One morning we woke up and just needed brunch. My bones ached for brunch! So we trekked into Daegu, and after driving around in circles, almost ready to give up…we miraculously happened upon Bean’s Market . Classy and cozy inside, with a menu that offered some breakfasty items along with Italian inspired dishes and a large wine menu (Dom Perignon for $500 a bottle, anyone?) we ordered a belgian waffle plate that came with a fried egg, a savoury sausage link that literally snapped when cut and a nice green salad. It was delicious- the waffle was light and airy with a touch of sweetness…everything on the plate was gone in mere minutes, and I probably could have eaten another entire serving- but at a pricey $17 a plate, I stopped at 1. Since American style breakfasts are not part of the Korean culture, one has to expect to pay a bit of a premium for the experience, and ……delivered. The flavours and ambiance offered here was well worth it.
